Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are removable dental appliances Dr. Michalak may recommend if you want to replace multiple missing teeth. Dentures look and act like your natural teeth, restoring your chewing ability and your smile.

Dentures are available if you’ve lost teeth due to decay, injury, or disease. There are two types of dentures available:

Conventional dentures: removable custom-fit dentures that you use after Dr. Michalak extracts your natural teeth and your tissues heal properly.

Immediate dentures: removable custom-fit dentures that Dr. Michalak inserts immediately following an extract surgery to protect your gums and promote healing.

How are dentures customized?

Dr. Michalak measures your facial structure and natural lip line to create a custom denture that fits perfectly in your mouth. He can create a full set of dentures when you’re missing all of your natural teeth or use dental implants that allow you to snap on a removable denture. These snap-on dentures give you more confidence your dentures will stay in place when you’re chewing food.

All dentures are made of high-quality acrylic and Dr. Michalak sends them to a dental laboratory right in Branford.

What can I expect when first wearing dentures?

Even custom-fit dentures can feel awkward at first. It can take a few weeks to feel more comfortable using your new dentures. It’s normal to feel some mild tenderness or soreness in your gums and you may salivate more frequently than normal.

As your mouth muscles adapt to holding the dentures in place, you’ll be able to eat and speak normally. Dr. Michalak also schedules follow-up visits to ensure your dentures continue to fit well and your gums are not being irritated or damaged.

How do I care for my dentures?

Dr. Michalak provides you with everything you need to know about caring for your dentures. It’s important that you remove your dentures each night and clean them properly, using a denture brush to remove food particles and other debris. Denture cleaners also eliminate bacteria and prevent gum irritation and infection.

If you use an adhesive to hold your dentures into place, it’s important to remove old material during each cleaning and apply new adhesive before inserting your dentures.
